Big Online Shopping Day: Cyber Monday

Posted: Updated:

The big weekend of shopping is still going strong with Cyber Monday starting in just a few hours. And as people make preps for the online shopping day, so are scammers.  You don't need to stand in lines for hours, or worry about being pushed around in a crowd, because Mondays shopping can be done all in the comfort of your home. But before you click your way through a Christmas wish list... You might want to do your research.

Thursday through Sunday have given shoppers some great deals. Jaelyn Nelson and Sonia Strauch came from Fergus Falls to shop the stores at West Acres but Monday they will be at home shopping online. "Anything with clothes mainly, or hair. I like shoes, so I'm probably going to look for a bunch of new shoes. Shoes definitely" they say.

The girls aren't the only ones looking online for great prices. Elizabeth Anderson, a shopper looks for things online too. "Deals for clothes for my daughter, because she grows so fast that I always want to get the best deals for her." Anderson says.

This year thanksgiving day online traffic went up 71% compared to 2011 meaning more people are looking for deals online. Kelli Dahl says "Some of the things they advertise is the free shipping, so I know that's always good incentive."

But shopping online can come at a cost if you aren't careful. "If it asks you for your social security then I'm like ah I'm not going to do this then, not at all." says Nelson. Dahl adds, "Getting the shipping address correct is sometimes not good."

So before you click your money away be sure to look for some key things. Nelson tells us, "At the top it should have a locked sign, which means it's a secured site, and if it doesn't have that then I wouldn't shop there at all." and Anderson states, "Just make sure it's a credible company and web site that you go to, and that it's got a secured web page that your adding information to, that you have to add a password to use it."

Strauch adds another tip, "Know your size too, because if you don't know what size you are and you get it, and then it's not the right size, you can't like try it on in a dressing room, you get it online," all great tips that will help Jaelyn and Sonia shop safe.

Also the Better Business Bureau says when you shop online you should use a credit card for purchases, and make sure to check your cards statements online for any suspicious activity. And because some retailers are offering some great deals this year, its predicted that this Monday will be the best selling cyber Monday of all.
