Teen Charged in Burglary at Home Where Others Were Shot

Posted: Updated:

FEBRUARY 6 UPDATE

A Little Falls teenager has been charged with burglarizing the home of a man in the months before he allegedly shot and killed two other teens who broke into his house.

Seventeen-year-old Cody Kasper was charged Tuesday in connection with two burglaries at the home of Byron Smith.

The 64-year-old Smith is charged in the Thanksgiving Day slayings of 17-year-old Nick Brady and 18-year-old Haile Kifer.

Smith's attorney, Steve Meshbesher, says Kasper and Brady worked on Smith's property last summer. Meshbesher says the charges against Kasper show Smith had been victimized in the months before the shootings. Meshbesher says Smith was scared.

Washington County Attorney Pete Orput is prosecuting Smith's case. He says Smith is using the prior burglaries as an excuse for murder.

UPDATE

Court documents show a Little Falls man accused of fatally shooting two teenagers had a surveillance system that recorded video of the cousins as they broke into his home Thanksgiving Day.

The St. Cloud Times reports that search warrants reveal 64-year-old Byron David Smith also made an audio recording of the shootings. Smith is charged with murdering Nick Brady and Haile Kifer.

The search warrants allege Smith was sitting in a basement chair when he shot Brady, then sat back down and shot Kifer minutes later. The warrants also say Smith appeared to have blood on his shoes and clothes when authorities arrived.

Authorities learned of the video and audio recordings while searching Smith's home. They then went back and seized several computer memory cards and computer equipment.

ORIGINAL STORY

Two teenagers shot and killed in a home near Little Falls have been identified. School officials say the victims were cousins, 18-year-old Haile Kifer and 17-year-old Nicholas Brady.

The shooter, 64-year-old Byron Smith of Little Falls, is being held for second-degree murder and is likely to be charged Monday. Morrison County deputies went to Smith's house Friday and he confessed to shooting the teenagers a day earlier after they broke into his house. The Morrison County sheriff says people have the right to defend themselves and their homes, but investigators believe Smith took self-defense too far.
