Former Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk was arrested for drunk driving Monday. But lawyers say Fisk is just one of thousands of drunk drivers, and victims should know their rights.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) November 20, 2012
Former Boston Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk was arrested Monday for drunk driving after police found him passed out in his car in a corn field, reported ESPN. The 64 year old retired athlete is the latest in a string of celebrity DUI charges, which has included running back Michael Turner and former defensive back Ray Buchanan of the Atlanta Falcons. But attorneys with Chicago Injury Attorneys, a legal advice website, say the uptick in drunk driving is not limited to athletes alone – and sober drivers should know their rights.
“Every local government has tried to crack down on drunk driving, but it often doesn't work,” said Karla Bradford, a spokesperson for the website. “Every week we see people who were struck by drunk drivers, and we know there are many more who never take the time to talk to a lawyer.”
Fisk's car was spotted in the middle of a cornfield early in the morning. Police investigated and found the Hall of Famer unconscious at the wheel, with an open bottle of alcohol in the vehicle, according to authorities. Paramedics were called and Fisk was transported to the hospital before being charged with DUI, a lane violation and illegally transporting alcohol.
No one was hurt in the incident, but Bradford says not every DUI ends so well.
“Most drunk drivers never make headlines because they aren't celebrities,” she said. “But often they're much worse than what happened here. [Fisk] didn't hurt anyone but himself, but what if he had hit another vehicle?”
Bradford says that anyone in a car accident should talk to an attorney, whether they feel injured or not – especially if alcohol was involved. She says Chicago Injury Attorneys exists as a free portal to help victims do just that.
“Compensation is available to accident victims,” Bradford said. “You don't know your options until you talk to a good attorney, which is why we offer free consultations.”
