St. Louis County authorities are investigating the death of a 49-year-old man who was found unconscious in a wooded area.

The sheriff's office received a 911 call Friday about 12:45 p.m. from someone who found the man near Myrtle Lake in Portage Township. Authorities say the man appeared to be suffering from exposure and wasn't responsive.

Rescue officials rushed him to a hospital but he died in the ambulance.

Authorities identified him Saturday as James Joseph Hoheisel of Hillman. The cause of death is under investigation.
