Hockey Fans Help Raise Funds For Player, Nick Schmit

Posted: Updated:

Athletics can be a life changing hobby... And tonight it's making life's hardships a little easier for one family. The Fargo Force held a benefit for Fargo North's goaltender, Nick Schmidt.

Every person and every ticket at tonight's (Friday) Fargo Force hockey game, means a player gets some help following his dreams of playing hockey.

Nick Schmit of Fargo says, "Right away, I thought it was just cuts."

Nick's mom, Jane Schmit, says, "They said Nick's been hurt, come to the dock."

Last July, former Fargo North goalie, Nick Schmit was hit by a boat propeller and seriously cut from his shoulder to hip. After months of recovery, the Scheels Arena and Fargo Force held a benefit to raise funds for his family.

Jane says, "You know, you just don't want to ask for help."

"Just, it means a lot out help out my family," says Nick.

For every person who walks through the doors, a dollar will be donated. And if it's a sell out, 50 cents gets added onto it.

"Everything, it's overwhelming and we are just thankful," says Jane.

A silent auction, foam puck sales and a raffle are also raising money for the Schmits. And even though the dollars are important, for Nick and his family...

"To get him better, to get him up and home, and back where he wanted to be," says Jane.

Just being able to follow his dream is what matters most.

The Dakota Medical Foundation Lend A Hand program is matching up to $5000. Recently, Nick has been practicing with a team in Minot and hopes to keep playing when he's done with physical therapy.

And if you weren't able to make it to the game tonight (Friday) and still want to help the Schmit family out, you can! Just go to www.dakmed.org/lendahand, click "Donate"and enter a gift amount next to the Nick Schmit Benefit Fund. You can also drop off/mail a cash or check donation (payable to Nick Schmit Benefit) to: Bell State Bank, 3100 13th Ave. S., Fargo, ND 58103
