"Canstruction" Leading Up to Fill the Dome

Posted: Updated:

The future engineers of America or at least the ones at Oak Grove High School put their skills to the test Friday morning. Students had 20 minutes to design and build structures honoring America using only food. The 6th annual "Canstruction" is just the beginning of fighting hunger in our community.

Creations that were once drawings etched on a piece of notebook paper came to life quickly, though once all the creative dusts settled and the judging was complete, the real work began.

All the cans and food items have to go somewhere. Friday morning, they went in the box, but they will not be there long.

Oak Grove Student Council member Jordyn Berger says "We'll go to the Dome Monday and unload with the rest of the schools. Then Tuesday will be the press conference. We'll pack it up, then Great Plains will distribute it.

The 6th annual Fill the Dome event is just days away.

Former student Joe Burgum has seen the effort put forth so far saying, "Hundreds of hours have been spent raising money and sending out letters and going door-to-door."

Come early next week Oak Grove along with schools across the Fargo-Moorhead area will see their tireless efforts help feed the hungry in North Dakota and Western Minnesota.

Berger says, "We're young but we can make a big impact." Burgum adds, "Our generation is gonna be a generation that helps serve America through volunteerism."

These are efforts that current and former students hope to continue seeing for years to come.

"To think that there are seventh graders here today that potentially in six years could be seniors, and it'd be the 12th annual Fill the Dome is a testimony to our community," says Burgum.

If you would like to help with this year's Fill the Dome, here's how:

1. Bring cans to F-M area schools or to the Fargodome Monday and Tuesday

2. Donate ONLINE at www.fillthedome.org

3. Text "FILLDOME" to 20222 to make a $10 donation that will be added to your phone bill

4. Go to an area Hornbacher's store and purchase a $10 bag of food- they'll deliver it to the Dome for you!
