ND Boy Killed in Crash Had Just Undergone Brain Cancer Surgery

Posted: Updated:

A family member says the young boy who died along with his father and another man in a southern Minnesota crash was heading home to North Dakota after brain cancer surgery.

Jack and Mardee Reich were bringing 10-year-old Vander back home to their ranch in Zap, North Dakota, on Tuesday when their Chevy Suburban collided head-on with a pickup truck on Highway 14 near Dodge Center.

Jack and Vander Reich were killed along with the driver of the pickup, who has been identified as Scott Hodgman of West Concord. Mardee Reich is recovering from injuries at St. Mary's in Rochester, the same hospital where Vander had his surgery.

Mardee's mother, Maureen Williams, tells the Star Tribune her grandson was scheduled to return to St. Mary's for radiation treatment in a couple weeks.

Jack Reich was a prominent figure in North Dakota's cattle industry. He was a longtime official with the North Dakota Stockmen's Association and recently served as the group's president. Stockmen's Executive Vice President Julie Ellingson tells The Bismarck Tribune that Reich and his son represented rural values.

The Reich cattle ranch has held a well-reputed annual production sale in February. Family friend Keith Kessler of Beulah says Reich also helped introduce North Dakota cattle to the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan.
