Man Shot & Killed Hunting near Bemidji

A weekend of hunting turns deadly for one family this weekend,a man was shot Saturday morning while hunting in Beltrami County.  Police say Donald Zane Bixby, 64, of Bemidji was dead when rescue crews arrived on the scene

Bixby's daughter says her dad always insisted on firearms safety. She also says her dad was standing next to a pickup about 9:00 a.m. when he was hit on public land about nine miles northeast of Bemidji. It happened hear the Concordia Language Village.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's office says the other hunter who shot Bixby, 48-year-old  Phillip Nyland, is also from Bemidji. The two men are acquaintances but were not hunting together.

This incident continues to be under investigation by the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office.  An autopsy is pending with the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office, in Ramsey, MN.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene of the shooting by the MN DNR, MN State Patrol and Bemidji Ambulance Service.
