Shots Fired, Walmart Evacuated, Juvenile Arrested in Fergus Falls

Posted: Updated:

A busy night in Fergus Falls Saturday. Three incidents all believed to be unrelated kept the Otter Tail County Sheriffs Office and Fergus Falls Police Department with their hands full.

It was all the hype on Facebook, comments were rolling in regarding what was going on with all the riff raff in Fergus Falls Saturday night. It all started with the evacuation of Walmart around 8pm.

Doug Norland a Fergus Falls resident heard about the mayhem going down on Saturday, "I heard there was an issue going around Walmart that was the one thing. And recently I was told about a rifle shooting downtown."

Authorities treated the situation like a bomb threat, a threatening phone call lead to authorities combing the building but nothing was found. By a quarter to 10 employees were let back in.

This type of thing doesn't happen in Fergus Falls according to longtime resident Lowell Bartel, "my first reaction was surprised because I didn't know something like that would happen in town. We're such a small community."

The instances in Fergus Falls weren't confined to just Walmart yesterday. It's been reported that somebody was carrying around a long arm firearm in a neighborhood not far from downtown. Last night at about 11:45 an employee at the MK gas station got off work when she says she heard two shots fired. Shots that have folks in town wondering, were the situations related?

"Nothing usually does happen here but I've seen some things happening lately." Says Lynette Bartel who was surprised by all the chaos Saturday night.

When police were looking into the situation involving someone walking around with a gun near First Avenue and Linden, they heard the shots too. Today they arrested a Fergus Falls juvenile who's been charged with stealing the weapon from an acquaintance and now faces felony charges. Authorities say at this point they don't think it was the minor who shot the rounds off. And the public, is just glad to get the details.

Lynette says the sooner she can get that type of information the better, "I'm sure they're staying on top of it but I think they should let the people know more about what is going on and keep people posted. Cause that's something important for people to know that there is someone walking around with a rifle."

Authorities say all three cases appear to be unrelated. They're looking into phone records at Wal-mart to see if they can find out who made the threatening phone call that forced the evacuation. As far as the gun shot, they are still investigating.
