ND Guard soldiers likely to serve in DC area

Posted: Updated:

More than 200 soldiers with a North Dakota National Guard unit based in Grand Forks have been put on alert that they likely will be called to duty next spring.

The Guard says the 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment expects to mobilize in May for a yearlong mission in Washington, D.C., helping protect airspace around the nation's capital.

The North Dakota soldiers are expected to replace soldiers with a Florida National Guard unit.

The 188th has detachments in Fargo and Bismarck. It will be the 10th deployment for the unit in less than a decade. Soldiers also have served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo.
