Posted: Updated:

At least 16 people have died as Sandy continues its assault on the northeast. Millions are without power, and the damage is in the billions.

Large parts of south New Jersey are under water this morning, including in Cape May, and the threat is no where near passed as these winds continue. Across the northeast violent waves toppled over sea walls threatening coastal communities.

Sandy sent a record 13-foot storm surge into New York City flooding tunnels, subways and streets.

"This is a once in a longtime storm, the surge is very high," said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

At Langone Medical Center in New York, emergency crews worked to evacuate more than 200 patients after their back up generator goes down.

In Atlantic City, New Jersey flood waters destroyed a portion of the world famous boardwalk. The National Guard rescued at least two dozen people trapped in shelters who lost power.

To anyone else still on the barrier islands, Governor Chris Christie offered little hope. "This is now your responsibility. If you are still able to hear me we need you to hunker down."

This super storm wreaked havoc from Connecticut to New York stretching out more than 700 miles. Strong winds at times over 80 miles an hour tore down trees and power lines.

At least two homes in Connecticut were destroyed by fire. Floods prevented firefighters from saving them.  In Queens another fire damaged more than a dozen homes several people have died because of Sandy and millions have no power.

Across the nation more than 12,000 flights have been canceled, and this storm, that could impact 60 million people, isn't finished yet.

With just one week left until election day, Hurricane Sandy has put a temporary halt on campaign 2012. President Obama and Mitt Romney, as well as their running mates, have canceled events scheduled for Tuesday.
