Hidden Costs of FM Diversion Project

Posted: Updated:

Crops,Children and memories have been raised here at the Nips tad farmstead. "This is a centennial farm." This was the home of Jerome Nipstad's mother. Jerome's father farmed this land, and years later, Jerome took over. Jerome married his high school sweetheart Sandy, making her apart of the history.

"We raised a family here. Our grandson wants to be a fifth generation farmer," says Nipstad. One hundred years. Five generations Threatened by one major project. "Something needs to be done," says Nipstad. "We don't want to make promises we cant keep," says Kevin Campbell, a board member with the Flood Diversion Authority. A group put together to ultimately come up with a plan that would protect the cities of Fargo and Moorhead from any catastrophic event. "These floods are happening and they are happening more frequently," says Campbell.

The Diversion Authority along with the corps of engineers drafted a plan that would put the communities of Oxbow, Hickson and Bakke in the deep end. They would have to stand on their roofs to just keep their head above water. "It's like Fargo is a drunk driver," says Mark Waltz, who lives in the Bakke subdivision. "It's a challenge when you do this you know you're impacting peoples lives. The alternate option is overwhelming to think of,"says Campbell. "It's unfortunate. We don't have the answers. It's the nature of the beast."

Mark Waltz built his home and shop here because of the country living lifestyle the area has to offer. "All of a sudden there is no more happiness," says Waltz. Bound by the waters, split on their paths, a whirlpool spins where they collide. "Well stop it, somehow if it means legal means," says Waltz.

And no matter what, the Nipstads say they will fight to save the only piece of history his family knows. For more information on the F-M diversion project, visit fmdiversion.com.
