SD DOT to Drivers: Use Extreme Caution

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is advising motorists that travel is difficult across the state due to extremely high winds.

The Department of Transportation is advising motorists to use extreme caution because many semis and vehicles have tipped over on and along roadways, especially in central and western South Dakota.

The Department of Transportation is specifically warning drivers of high-profile vehicles such as semis, trucks, buses and SUVs to use extreme caution.

Gusting winds have pushed trees on several highways and blown down power lines and poles, causing temporary delays until maintenance crews arrive to clear the roads.

Drivers are also reminded of the extreme fire danger and they should not throw cigarettes or other debris from vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service, strong northwest winds of 50 mph—gusting to 70 mph—will persist across South Dakota through much of the overnight hours.
