New Alzheimer's Findings

Posted: Updated:

In tonight's HealthierMe, plaque build-ups in a elderly person's brain may be more harmful to them than having the Alzheimer's gene.

Researchers tracked healthy elderly adults for memory and thinking skills over 18 months and found that those who had more brain plaque on the scans showed 20% greater cognitive declines compared to those with less plaque. Those who had the gene also had declines, but that didn't change the decline in memory related to the plaques.

Here's what we can take away from it: whether or not you have the Alzheimer's gene, you'll be better off if you can avoid plaque build-up.
