Interstate Shut Down Thanks to Camper Fire

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters say it's not as freaky a story as you might think: an entire three-mile stretch of I-29 shut down during the Monday afternoon commute while they battled a grass fire spreading from ditch to ditch.

But it wasn't a careless cigarette that caused it.

It was a pickup pulling a camper.

Other drivers called authorities to say it was burning for some miles while the driver drove on, apparently unaware.

Firefighters say we're all at risk for spreading grass fires these days, thanks to dry, windy conditions.

Firefighters say the driver likely didn't notice the flames from his vehicle were starting fires because the sparks can often smolder for some time before erupting into flames. It's unclear what started the blaze in the vehicle in the first place.
