ND & MN Pheasant Opener

Posted: Updated:

This past weekend was the first chance for hunters in North Dakota and Minnesota to hit the fields in search of pheasants.

The reports from both sides were that the weather was great, but the birds, at times, were spotty.

North Dakota Game and Fish biologist Doug Leier says he heard a mixed bag of hunters saying they were successful and hunters saying they did not see much.

That does not surprise him.

Leier says surveys showed numbers were up statewide, but it is what you see in the fields that counts.

"That really got the visions of bags of roosters really kind of pumping and grinding in people's heads and remembering how great hunting had been three or four years ago. So I think there was probably maybe some disappointment," says Leier.

If you were not seeing the success you wanted, Leier says do not worry, there is plenty of season left.

You can hunt pheasant in North Dakota until January 6. In Minnesota the season ends January 1.
