The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the man was 69-year-old Eugene Kaatz of Casselton. It happened late Saturday afternoon off of Highway 18. While he was crossing, an eastbound train came and blew its horn, but Kaatz could not get off the tracks in time. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office and the North Dakota Highway Patrol say a 69-year-old-man from Casselton died after being struck by a train Saturday afternoon.

It happened just after 4 p.m. on the railroad tracks that run across Highway 18, known as Langer Avenue.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a westbound train cleared the crossing, and the man started to go over the tracks while the crossing arms were still down. An eastbound train then approached.

Authorities say the train engineer sounded a warning whistle before the crash, but the man was not able to make it off the tracks in time.

Sgt. David Wolf of the North Dakota Highway Patrol says, "Everything points to the crossing arms were working at the time of the collision. We're still making sure everything is properly documented that was working at the time."

The name of the man is not being released until his family is notified.

Authorities are still investigating. They hope to finish a preliminary investigation by the end of Saturday evening.
