Field Conditions Optimal for Deer Gun Opener

Posted: Updated:

The years of stories about bucks standing out of reach in knee deep water may be a thing of the past.

The North Dakota Game and Fish says field conditions should be pretty good come November.

The drought has dried the ground in many areas including sloughs. The corn is coming off quickly, leaving less escape cover.

While deer numbers have only increased slightly in North Dakota, hunters should be optimistic.

Game and Fish Biologist Doug Leier says, "With the reduced number of tags we have for the rifle season combined with the reduced harvest that we had last year and the optimal conditions that we've had this year, I think it's safe to assume for hunters that your odds of seeing a deer this year should be a little better."

Deer gun season in North Dakota opens November 9 at noon.

On the Minnesota side, deer gun season for sections 1A, 2A and 3A begins November 3. Section 3B begins November 17.
