Woman Hit and Killed After Jumping from Bridge

Posted: Updated:

Westbound traffic on Interstate 94 was rerouted after a woman jumped from a bridge and was hit by a car and killed.

It happened just before 8:30 Saturday night at the 34th Street exit in Moorhead.

Drivers were diverted at Exit 336 and had to take the frontage road along the interstate.

The Minnesota Highway Patrol says a report came in that a woman was running in and out of traffic on the 34th Street overpass. When officers were on their way, she jumped and was hit by at least one vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle was 25-year-old Benjamin Deraas. Deraas was not hurt.

Sgt. Lonnie Wambach of the Minnesota State Patrol says not a lot is known at this point, explaining, "We're still, like I said, trying to talk to people and talk to anybody that saw anything or knew anything. And if anybody did see anything, we'd appreciate a call if they didn't stick around."

The westbound lanes opened again around 10 p.m. They will be closed down Sunday in order for investigators to reconstruct the scene.

The Minnesota State Patrol has not said when that will happen.
