Finders Keepers: $7,000 Diamond Never Claimed

On October 4, 2012, the Moorhead Police Department released information that a one carat diamond had been found in a parking lot near the Little Caesar's Pizza restaurant in South Moorhead. The oval diamond had been appraised by a local jeweler to have an approximate value of $7,000.

The stone has an identification number that may be tracked by the original owner or jeweler. Police worked to find the original owner, but the International Gemological Institute confirmed that the diamond has never been registered.

The Moorhead Police Department received a few inquiries about the diamond; however, the previous owner was never located. Legally, the diamond is now being returned to the Moorhead man that originally found the diamond last September.

He wishes to remain anonymous to the public, but the Moorhead Police Department says his good faith efforts demonstrated a fine example of the character of people in our community.

ORIGINAL STORY

A diamond was found in a Moorhead parking lot, and Moorhead Police are looking for its owner.

A South Moorhead man discovered the diamond in the parking lot of the Holiday Mall near 8th Street and 24th Avenue South about 2 weeks ago near the Little Caesar's Pizza restaurant. The diamond was brought to a jeweler that identified the diamond as just under one karat with an appraisal value of approximately $7,000.

The diamond has an identification number that would have been provided on purchase paperwork and would also be retained by the selling jeweler. This identification number has been checked through the International Gemological Institute with no indications of registration.

The diamond can only be claimed by proof of ownership for this specific diamond, including documentation containing the identification number.

Although the man who found this diamond wishes to remain anonymous, the police department says they are grateful for his character and honesty in working to return the diamond to its owner.
