Valley could see measurable snow

Posted: Updated:

Parts of North Dakota look to be in for some early October snowfall.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the west and central parts of the state late Wednesday and early Thursday, and a winter storm watch for the northern Red River Valley.

Valley News Live Storm Team Meteorologist Lisa Green says an intense storm system will blast into the Valley beginning today. Rain will spread from the central Dakotas into the Devils Lake basin.

As temperatures fall Wednesday night, rain will mix with and change over to snow by sunrise. There will be accumulation of snow by drive time Thursday morning for some. Gusty northwest wind will cause areas of reduced visibility.

The snow will end from southwest to northeast throughout Thursday, but it could still be snowing in northern Minnesota for the commute home from work.

The weather service says measurable snow is not all that uncommon in North Dakota this time of year, and snow that accumulates early in the season usually melts. Forecasters say as much as 3 inches of snow could fall in some eastern areas by Thursday afternoon.
