Man Finds Grenade Near Red River

Posted: Updated:

An unusual discovery near the Hjemkomst Center along the Red River Sunday night. Someone walking along the river around 7:30 p.m. came across what he thought looked like a grenade, so he called police.

The regional bomb squad was called, and both Fargo and Moorhead Police cleared the park after the bomb squad said it wasn't confident the object could be handled safely. Just before 10:00 Sunday night, the bomb squad used explosives for a controlled detonation of the grenade.

Police are investigating how the grenade could have gotten there, but say based on its appearance, it has been in the river for a while. The grenade is believed to be from the World War II era.
