Truck Convoy for Special Olympics

Posted: Updated:

The Special Olympics of North Dakota just celebrated 40 years in the state. Not to toot their own horn, but Saturday they kind of did, with the help from more than 60 semi trucks.

Law enforcement and truckers helped raise thousands of dollars for the Special Olympics. They left the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo Saturday morning, many of them with athletes sitting shotgun.

The idea behind the event is to give kids the chance to mingle with the drivers of the big rigs, and to raise some much needed funds.

"It's an industry, the trucking industry, that often times isn't recognized as being community leaders. The trucking industry a number of years ago said, hey we want to participate we recognize what the program is," says Kathy Meagher the Special Olympics of North Dakota President.

Next year's convoy will be lead by Saturday's top bidder, Gentzkow Trucking out of Lamoure, North Dakota. The company bid $1,700.

That event will be held September, 21 2013.
