Whooping Cranes Passing Through ND

Posted: Updated:

(AP) - Endangered whooping cranes will be passing through North Dakota during their fall migration over the next few weeks, and wildlife officials are looking for the public's help.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is asking anyone who spots a whooper to report the sightings so the birds can be tracked.

The birds stand about 5 feet tall and have a wingspan of about 7 feet. They are bright white with black wing tips. In flight they extend their long necks straight forward and their legs extend out behind them. They usually fly alone or in small groups, sometimes with sandhill cranes.

Sightings can be reported to Game and Fish or the agency's local game wardens around the state, or to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
