$1.6 Billion: Taxpayers Weigh In

Posted: Updated:

The news that North Dakota's budget is one point six billion dollars to the good has a lot of folks talking about how to spend the surplus.

Not only did Valley News Live get a ton of great ideas on Facebook, but shoppers at Fargo's West Acres mall were more than willing to talk money.

Bolstering the state's educational institutions was a top suggestion, especially providing relief for tuition, fees and other charges that some taxpayers said are critical to maintaining a strong state economy of skilled workers in the future.

Tax relief for all of us was another popular idea. So was the suggestion of a tax rebate.
"I don't want all of it to come back to us, but some of it would be nice," said Mark Anderson, of Mapleton, ND. "There are a lot of other states out there hurting right now, and it's too bad. We've been in that boat too, many years."

Lawmaker Al Carlson and other state and national leaders spent Wednesday hearing from oil field producers and suppliers about their needs for improved infrastructure in the western part of the state.

Carlson says not all of the revenue is strictly from the oil fields. He says $730 million is from sales tax, and another five to six hundred million is from property, income and corporate taxes. Carlson says his first priority is getting some of the cash back in the hands of taxpayers.
