School's Paying Close Attention

Posted: Updated:

Throughout the school day many people come on and off campus, but do schools know exactly who may be walking through the doors? That's something detective Joe Gress with the Cass County Sheriff's Office is trying to make sure schools are aware of. "We wanted to go into schools and point out any weaknesses," says Gress.

For the past two days, Gress went undercover as a so called intruder to numerous Cass County schools, including here at Fargo North "They had an intruder drill to see how are staff would act," says Andy Dahlen, Principal at Fargo North. Gress says many times teachers around the area may notice a strange person on campus but not say anything right away.

"When we're dealing with safety of kids, we need to put North Dakota nice aside, that's part of their job to say, 'Excuse me can I help you," says Gress. Now when the intruder walked through the halls here, luckily they were noticed right away by a teacher and she followed the appropriate measures.

But the principal says the school can still learn things from the drill. "Other people saw the person they didn't react. We could always be a little better," says Dahlen. And Gress says that goes the same for all the schools where they conducted the drill.
