North Dakota Soldiers Go to Guantanamo

Posted: Updated:

What would you do if your boss sent you away for a year to be in charge of some of the most dangerous people on earth?
Not to mention -- in one of the most controversial assignments in the news?
For some North Dakota National Guardsmen -- it's an assignment they're delighted to take on.
About thirty members of the 191st Military Police Company are setting off for Guantanamo Bay.
The year-long deployment doesn't allow them any trips back home in that time.
They'll also not find out much detail about their responsibilities until after they arrive for training.
This is the first time North Dakota soldiers have ever been sent to Guantanamo. Staff Sergeant Matthew Nelson says the experience of soldiers who've been deployed worldwide likely played a role in the military's choice to send them to Guantanamo, and that in spite of the controversy in the public over Guantanamo, it won't have an effect on how they do their jobs.
"We have a group of very disciplined soldiers, a group of very professional soldiers. North Dakota is known nationwide, worldwide as being some of the best, and I don't have any doubt that we'll be able to complete this mission and make it a success as well," he says.
The soldiers will start most of their training in Fort Bliss at the end of October.
