Fargo Fire Debuts New Ladder Truck

Posted: Updated:

It's one of the newest tools in Fargo's Fire Department arsenal. A state of the art 100 ft. platform ladder truck.

The new truck officially went into service yesterday afternoon, replacing the departments previous ladder truck that dates back to 1986. Manufactured by Smeal Fire Apparatus Co. in Snyder, Nebraska. The $872,000 truck has a variety of new features to better help fire fighters and the public.

Those features include:

  • 1500GPM pump capabilities, similar to fire engines
  • A 300 gal. Water Tank, not previously on the old truck
  • Rescue extrication equipment, "Jaws of Life"

The new pump and larger water tank along with pre-connect hoses, allow the truck to have it's own water supply and pumping capability to help flow water through it's snorkel system. Water can be shot from a cannon at the front of the bucket and a sprinkler underneath allows water to rain down directly over a fire if needed.

Not only is the rescue extraction equipment new to the truck, it's also new to firefighters. Previous tools required hydraulic hose connections, the new tools are battery operated and more portable for use at a rescue scene.

In addition to the 100 ft. ladder being used for high rise rescue. It can acutely dip 10 degrees below grade as well, if needed to rescue someone from a trench or over the river.
