Hearing Tuesday on Crystal Jobless Benefits

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota's Supreme Court is taking up the issue of whether locked-out American Crystal Sugar Co. workers should be paid jobless benefits. More than 230 workers are appealing a Job Service North Dakota decision that they're not eligible for unemployment checks.

State law says workers who are part of a labor dispute aren't entitled to benefits, but a lawyer for the workers says the law was meant to apply to workers who go on strike. The American Crystal employees have been locked out of their jobs for more than a year.

A Job Service official says about 400 North Dakota workers could be affected by the Supreme Court's decision. If they win the case they could get at least $4 million in benefits.

The court is hearing arguments Tuesday afternoon.
