South Fargo Fire
the Fargo Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in a house but no flames at 3508 11th Street South just before 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning. When crews got there, the homeowner said there was smoke in the basement and first floor and it seemed to be coming from the East side of the home.
During Investigation, a smoldering fire was discovered on the deck that had burned into the siding and floor joists of the home. The fire was quickly extinguished. Everyone got out of the home and no one was hurt.
The owner of the home told investigators he had come home at 8:00 p.m. Friday to find a small fire burning in a plastic flower pot on his deck. Others in the home said they threw cigarettes in that flower pot earlier. The home owner did not call the fire department and put the fire out with a garden hose.
Everyone left the house shortly after and did not return for a few hours. When they got back home is when they discovered the smoke in the house and called the fire department. Damage is estimated at $20,000.
The owner of the house stated that smoke detectors were going off when they arrived home. They then shut the electricity off to the entire house.
The Fargo Fire Department encourages everyone to use caution when discarding smoking materials, especially during dry weather.
North Fargo Fire
While Fargo fire crews were fighting a fire in South fargo, a report of flames and smoke coming from the back of a single family home was called in on the north side of town.
A passerby walking down the street noticed the fire at 1225 5th Street North and called 911. When fire units got there, flames and heavy smoke were coming from the back side of the house.
It as quickly discovered that the fire had burned up the exterior wall at the rear of the house and had entered the attic. One fire crew extinguished the fire on the outside, while three other crews extinguished the attic fire from inside the home. There were four people renting the house, and with the help of the Fargo Police Department, everyone made it out safely.
The fire caused heavy damage to the attic, roof, and rear exterior wall of the house. `There is also considerable smoke and water damage to the first floor and the contents throughout the building. Because of the damage, the tenants were unable to stay in the house. They were all able to find housing with friends and relatives.
the investigation found the fire started the deck on the back of the house. A possible cause being investigated includes the improper use of a gas grill. Charcoal had been used in the gas grill earlier in the evening for cooking. Damage is estimated at $50,000.
The Fargo Fire Department say there were no working smoke detectors and the house didn't have a sprinkler system.
