More Water Problems at YMCA

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE

The excavating company has discovered further issues with the water lines coming into the Schlossman facility located at 4243 19th Avenue South. This will necessitate a scheduled shutdown of the facility Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16.

Water to the facility will need to be turned off to complete the repairs. The whole facility will be closed with the exception of the 24 Hour Fitness Area, which will be staffed. Access to the Fitness Area will be through the after hours door.

We are planning to reopen the entire facility at our regular time Monday, September 17th at 5:00am. The Fercho YMCA, located at 400 1st Ave. S, and Family Wellness, located at 2960 Seter Parkway, will remain open regular hours.

ORIGINAL STORY

It's not the typical sights and sounds one is use to at the Schlossman Y on 42nd Street south in Fargo. A water line break that took place around 4 a.m., left the basement here flooded.

"We thought the break was inside the building but then we realized it was outside. So the city was called and they were able to stop the line," says Paul Finstad, Executive Director of the Schlossman Y.

But by then, things were already a wet mess, forcing the Y to shut down operations for the day. "We're going to deal with it as quickly as we can," says Finstad.

The locker room here in the basement saw some of the worst flooding. The carpet at one point covered in about 3 inches of water.

But the Y here, isn't the only place crews have been to fix a water main break Wednesday. This one near Elm circle in north Fargo and this one on 35th avenue north.

"We've had pretty busy years but this has been a busy summer," says Darrell Sweep, with the City of Fargo. Sweep believes the dry conditions are causing the lines to break. "It's causing the ground to shift. It's like winter frost," says Sweep.

For Paul Finstad, he says whatever the reason is, he hopes the mess is cleaned up soon and Thursday business will be back to normal.

The 24 hour fitness center will open at 9:00 Wednesday. And Thursday, the Schlossman center will be open at regular times. The skate park and climbing wall will be the only things closed.
