11th Dumpster Fire In Less Than Two Months

Posted: Updated:

Moorhead Police are stepping up patrols in the area where almost a dozen dumpster fires have occurred in the past couple months. The most recent fire happened Monday night off of the 1000 block and 17th Street South, in a neighborhood that has seen five dumpster fires in the past week.

Monday's dumpster fire is the latest in a growing number in Moorhead and not the first one that some people have run across. Spencer Ruebke was surprised the first time, but not last night, "I know just a few nights ago another neighborhood dumpster was on fire too. So I guess I wasn't too surprised by it."

That's not to say Spencer wasn't alarmed, he called the police and before you know it his roommate took action."My roommate was kinda worried about our neighbor so he was knocking on the windows trying to wake them up and get them out of the house. Just in case, worse case scenario I guess." Explains Ruebke.

Since late June this is the 11th dumpster fire that they've seen in south Moorhead. It's been confined to about a four block radius just south of MSUM. While no structure has been damaged at this point, last nights blaze got pretty close.

Ruebke says the fire nearly jumped onto the roof of the apartment complex "the flames were inside and something must have caught cause the flames started getting pretty close to the roof of the house and it didn't look to good. It was pretty scary!"

The Moorhead Fire Department knows exactly how serious these things can get. Not just the flames getting out of control either. Chief Rich Duysen explains,"we're afraid it's going to get too close to a building and start a building on fire. Or as people who start fires, they often escalate, they want more excitement so they start structures on fire. And that's our main concern, we want to catch these people before anymore damage is done."

Authorities say fireworks have been found on the scene at several of these dumpster fires that are usually started between 9 PM and 2 AM.

Police want to remind who ever is behind the dumpster fires, when they're caught they'll be facing felonies by putting the lives of people and their property in danger.
