September 27 Update
New developments in the investigation into what caused a world-renowned local pilot's plane to crash. A memory card missing from a camera attached to Bob Odegaard's vintage airplane has been found at the Valley City airport.
Former National Guard Adjutant General Mike Haugen found the card near the crash site, next to the runway. It will be given to the Odegaard family who will turn it over to the FAA.
It's hoped that the card will offer some clues into the cause of the September 7th crash. Odegaard was practicing for an air show when his plane went down.
Update
There will be no air show tomorrow in Valley City. It's been called off after one of the pilots set to perform there has died. Bob Odegaard was killed there tonight (Friday), when he was practicing his routine which he was set to perform at tomorrow's show.
The plane, that Odegaard was flying was a 1945 Super Corsair, one of only two flying planes of that kind in the world. Authorities say he was doing a barrel roll, which is a maneuver he's done many times, when something went wrong. They can't say whether it was an operator or mechanical error.
People who were at the airport at the time of the crash say Odegaard's son, who is also a flyer, had just finished practicing his routine and was at the airport watching. And because of this loss, a decision has been made to cancel tomorrow's air show.
Chairman of Barnes County Airport Authority, Dennis Helland, says, "Couple other planes got damaged from the shrapnel coming out of the airplane, and people that are scheduled to perform tomorrow don't want to fly."
The FAA is looking into the cause of the crash. Airshow officials say they hope to reschedule the show for a later date when other pilots feel they are ready to fly. Bob Odegaard's death is not only a shock to the flying community around here, but around the country.
