Every 16 minutes someone in the United States commits suicide. Every minute, someone attempts it.
This weekend in Crookston, it's all about suicide prevention and awareness. They're holding a 5-K run, memory walk and golf scramble.
It's being organized by people who know.
Terri Heggie, Crookston: "In April of 2009 we lost our 18-year old son, Russ to suicide."
Kevin Boyle, Crookston: "Last year, October 24, my Grandson took his life and it was quite a shock to all of us."
So, Terri Heggie and Kevin Boyle have organized an event to provide education and support.
Terri Heggie: "The idea is to come together as a Community to raise awareness for suicide. And also it's a setting and a venue to support one another that have lost somebody to suicide."
Kevin Boyle: "I tell a lot of the children that if they see somebody that's out by themselves, they have no friends… I say go make friends with them. You may be saving their life. Another thing, you'll make somebody happy."
It all gets underway Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Highland Sports Complex in Crookston.
