Democrats Beginning National Convention

Posted: Updated:

Democrats are gathering in Charlotte, N.C., to nominate President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for second terms.

Delegates and party officials also hope to counter last week's Republican National Convention. They'll hear from first lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday, former President Bill Clinton on Wednesday and the president on Thursday.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama will make the case for reelection during a Labor Day visit to the key swing state of Ohio. He'll speak to autoworkers and as he did Sunday, reminding them of Mitt Romney's opposition to the auto industry bailout. Later, Obama will head to Louisiana to tour an area hard hit by Hurricane Isaac.

High water and no power are still challenges for hundreds of thousands in Louisiana dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac. Nearly 3,000 are still in shelters. As much as 5 feet of water still covers part of Plaquemines Parish. During a visit Monday, President Barack Obama will meet with state and local officials and inspect response efforts.
