Fire Dangers in Minnesota

Posted: Updated:

Minnesota park officials are reminding campers of high fire risks during the long weekend.  Many counties in central and northern Minnesota are rated high or very high for fire danger.

Bob Quady is a forester with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. He says there's a lot of fire potential because of the acres of dead trees, dry conifer needles and parched underbrush.

Under these conditions, a fire could sweep through a forest extremely quickly. The DNR reminds campers that campfires shouldn't be bigger than 3 feet high and 3 feet across. Quady says it's also important to control campfires and make sure embers aren't being thrown too far.
