Man Arrested After Chase

Posted: Updated:

A Moorhead man has been arrested after leading police on a chase overnight.

A Sergeant with the Moorhead Police Department attempted to stop a motorcycle for a minor traffic violation, but the man driving the motorcycle immediately fled and tried to get away by driving around an apartment building before getting back on the road again.

Police say the motorcycle was going up to 70mph while headed east on 30th Avenue South from 20 Street. The motorcycle went south on 28th Street and went out of city limits when the officer ended up losing sight of the driver.

Other officers located the motorcycle coming back into Moorhead and attempted to stop the it again.  The vehicle eventually went north on Old 52 before turning to go west on 12 Avenue South.

Officers lost the motorcycle again near 12th Avenue South and 14th Street.  They later located the motorcycle on its side at a residence.  A K-9 track was attempted but was unsuccessful.

An off duty Moorhead Police Detective had been monitoring the radio and heard the description of the suspect.  He was in the area and located a man matching the suspect's description near 24th Avenue South and 7th Street South. The man on the motorcycle was identified as Patrick Wayne Sandland.  Sandland admitted to the detective that he was the individual we were looking for.

The 29-year-old from Moorhead was taken to the Clay County Jail where he is being held on multiple charges:

  • Fleeing a Police Officer in Motor Vehicle (Felony)
  • 3rd Degree DUI (Gross Misdemeanor)
  • 3rd Degree DUI over .10 w/in 2 Hours (Gross Misdemeanor)

In addition to these charges, the motorcycle is subject to forfeiture because it was used to flee law enforcement.
