Taylor Unveils Education Proposal

Posted: Updated:

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The Democratic candidate for North Dakota governor is proposing an education plan that would include funding for early childhood programs, more scholarship money for college students and a boost in teacher salaries.

State Sen. Ryan Taylor on Wednesday unveiled his "Lasting Harvest" plan for education, from pre-kindergarten through college. He says the state should take advantage of its economic prosperity by investing in something that will last beyond the oil boom.

Taylor says North Dakota is one of only 10 states in the country that does not fund the Head Start program for low-income children. He says there are nearly 1,000 families on the waiting list for Head Start.

Taylor says he would raise the teacher pay ranking in the state from 47th in the nation to 40th within his first term.
