Sioux tribes upset over sale of sacred site

Posted: Updated:

A prime piece of real estate in South Dakota's Black Hills is up for auction, worrying Native American tribes that consider the property sacred space.

The land known as Pe' Sla (pay shlaw) is privately owned, but members of the Great Sioux Nation have been allowed to gather there every year to perform rituals. The site plays a key role in the tribes' creation story, and members fear new owners would develop it.

There's been talk of paving the main road through the area, and the auction house has advertised the nearly 2,000 acres as close to Mount Rushmore and ideal for development.

The tribes are trying to raise money to buy the land, but they have only $110,000 committed a week before the auction. The property is worth millions.
