Some Fargo stores set sales tax too high

Posted: Updated:

Shoppers in Fargo might want to check to make sure they are not being charged too much sales tax.

Fargo's sales tax dropped to 7% on July 1, and it's supposed to stay at the rate until the end of the year. But Fargo Auditor Steve Sprague says a few stores have reportedly lagged in making the switch.

City voters approved a half-cent sales tax extension in June that is intended to keep the city's sales tax at 7.5 cents.

But Sprague tells the Forum newspaper (http://bit.ly/PvQ6iR ) that because the state tax commissioner's office needs time to implement a tax extension, the half-cent approved by voters expired on June 30. The extra half-cent tax will go back on Jan. 1.
