UPDATE: Drowning in Otter Tail County

Posted: Updated:

The 51-year-old man who was scuba diving in Otter Tail County late Saturday afternoon and drown was an experienced diver.

The drowning happened at Seven Lake, located northeast of Vergas, Minnesota.

The fact that the man was scuba diving is not a surprise. Seven Lake is one of the clearest lakes in Otter Tail County. Residents who live on the lake say there is about 28 to 29 feet of water clarity. Divers go out to explore underwater islands and supposedly a prehistoric buffalo.

The same was the case for Saturday. Two friends were out in 20 feet of water just off the public access. One friend came to the surface and discovered his 51-year-old buddy was nowhere to be found.

At that point a boat driving by helped search for the missing man, cruising back and forth along the access. Though after twenty minutes the man's his body was found and retrieved from about eight feet of water. The man was pronounced dead when emergency crews arrived.

The cause of death is not known. The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department says they are looking at the scuba gear the man used. They said nothing appears visually wrong, meaning it does not look like the gear malfunctioned.

They will have an expert take a look at the gear to see and know for sure.

The man's name is expected to be released Monday after the rest of his family is notified.
