ND grain elevator gets help from oil industry

Posted: Updated:

The manager of the Berthold Farmers Elevator says the business is flourishing because of deals made with companies in the oil industry.

Dan DeRouchey says that he was worried a year ago he might not be able to keep all his employees because wet weather prevented many farmers from getting crops in the ground.

But he says the elevator now is poised to nearly double its revenue and add up to 40 new workers.

DeRouchey says the elevator is collaborating with an Enbridge Pipelines expansion that includes a railcar loading facility to be operated by elevator employees. The elevator also is working with oilfield service company Schlumberger to take sand from railcars and load it onto trucks that haul it to the oil patch.
