New Measures for ND Ballot

Posted: Updated:

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A proposed smoking ban in North Dakota bars isn't likely to be the only initiative that voters see this November.

Advocates for four other measures say they'll submit their petitions next week. The deadline falls at midnight Wednesday.

One initiative would make it a felony to beat or torture a cat, dog or horse. Another would set aside part of North Dakota's oil tax collections for conservation projects.

A third initiative would restrict new regulation of farming and ranching. The fourth would make medical marijuana legal in North Dakota.

Supporters of the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname say they're still deciding whether to turn in their proposal next week. It's a constitutional amendment that says UND's sports teams must always be known as the Fighting Sioux.
