Tolna Coulee Dedication

Posted: Updated:

A 9-million dollar flood control structure was dedicated today on the Tolna Coulee near Devils Lake.

The 800-foot long structure is designed to keep Devils Lake from spilling over into the Sheyenne river and causing downstream flooding.

The lake is now within 5-feet of spilling over. However a new pumping station on the east end of the lake, along with an existing one on the west end should lower the lake about one foot a year.  But, officials say that doesn't mean Devils Lake flooding problems are over.

Maj. Gen. John Peabody, Corps of Engineers: "This project delivers important capability to manage the situation. But, it would be the height of hubris to say we've got it taken care of and we don't have to worry anymore."

150,000 acres of farmland around Devils Lake remains under water.
