A Utah airport was shut down Tuesday after a fugitive attempted to steal a plane and then took his life.

Brian Joseph Hedglin,40, apparently drove his motorcycle to the St. George Municipal Airport and hopped the fence at 12:30 a.m., got on board the SkyWest plane, started the engines and began to taxi the aircraft.

While taxiing, he apparently clipped the wing of another aircraft and went through a fence.  A SkyWest official said Hedglin appears to have been trying to escape capture when the plane crashed into the terminal and adjacent parking lot.  He then shot himself and was later found dead.

A SkyWest spokesman said the incident caused minor damage to the terminal building and to some cars.  The aircraft was damaged but the extent of the damage was not immediately known.

Hedglin was wanted for questioning in the murder of Christina Cornejo, who was found dead in her Colorado Springs home Friday, July 13.

Records show Hedglin was a licensed pilot, certified as a transport pilot and to land multi-engine aircraft.  SkyWest officials report he was an employee who was on administrative leave at the time of the incident.

The Grand Forks Herald reports Hedglin's past addresses were UND's McVey Hall and two other residences in Grand Forks between October 1990 and June 1994, according to the legal research service Lexis.

An official from SkyWest was not able to confirm any information about Hedglin's education or training.

Hedglin was a 1990 honors graduate of Willmar, Minnesota High School. According to the Grand Forks Herald, several former classmates confirmed Tuesday night that he was the man in news reports of the suicide.
