The former bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo is being installed this week as the archbishop of the Denver Archdiocese. The ceremony for the Most Rev. Samuel Aquila is Wednesday afternoon at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver.
The Vatican announced Aquila's new position in May. He gave his farewell Mass in Fargo on June 24.
Most Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, former bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo, will be installed as Archbishop of Denver at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver.
A busload of invited guests, which include clergy, deacons, and diocesan staff from the Fargo area, will be traveling from here to Denver to attend the vespers and installation ceremonies.
Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, will preside over the Rite of Installation. The Mass will be held in the presence of Cardinal J. Francis Stafford. Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., will be among the Mass concelebrants. Archbishop Aquila will be the main Mass celebrant.
Due to the size of the cathedral, attendance at the installation is by invitation only. However, the event will be transmitted live via the Internet at the bottom of this story and on the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN).
In addition, a Solemn Vespers prayer event the evening prior is open to the public, and will begin at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Northglenn, Colorado.
According to Deacon Chuck Parker, Office of the Liturgy director for the Denver Archdiocese, "Solemn Vespers is an opportunity for all the faithful to gather around Archbishop Aquila for evening prayer." In addition, he said, it will give the archbishop a chance to meet the ecumenical and interfaith leaders of Colorado.
