Fire Destroys Buildings Near Perham

Posted: Updated:

A farm family near Perham, Minnesota, is in the middle of a big clean-up job a after a fire took down two of its buildings. It started in a barn off County Road 13 Saturday night, then spread to a nearby shed containing 250 hay bales.

By the time firefighters arrived, both buildings were completely engulfed. Chief Mark Schmidt says 30-foot flames were shooting out from the top of the barn. Nearly 60 firefighters from five departments worked the scene for more than three hours.

Homeowner Treva Mayfield says she's grateful no one was hurt. "It's tough, but we keep saying that it wasn't out house, it wasn't the machine shed, nobody's hurt. There's a path that god's taken us and we're just gonna have to follow it somehow."

The Perham Fire Department and Otter Tail County Sheriff's office are investigating, they're not sure yet what caused it, but say it's not suspicious.
