Kagan appointed Fargo apostolic administrator - Valley News Live - KVLY/KXJB - Fargo/Grand Forks

Pope appoints interim Fargo diocese leader

Posted: Updated:

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The Catholic Diocese of Fargo says the Rev. David Kagan has been named apostolic administrator of the diocese while a search for a new bishop gets underway.

Kagan is the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bismarck. The appointment is effective July 18.

The former bishop of the Fargo diocese, the Rev. Samuel Aquila, has been appointed as archbishop of the Denver Archdiocese.

During a period of time between bishops, Pope Benedict can appoint an apostolic administrator or college of consultors, a committee made up of diocesan priests that elects a priest as administrator until a permanent bishop is named.

The pope's representative and ambassador in the United States, along with the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops, will begin the search for Fargo's new bishop.
