Third man arrested in synthetic drug case

Posted: Updated:

Authorities have a made a third arrest in a deadly synthetic drug ring. The latest arrest ties directly to the death of an 18-year-old in Grand Forks.

Wesley Sweeney, 18, is accused of providing that deadly drug nearly three weeks ago. Sweeney is charged with two reckless endangerment felonies.

It's part of a larger case tying two teenagers' deaths to a batch of especially dangerous synthetic drug. That same drug also sent several other users to the hospital.

Prosecutors say at least three people--Christian Bjerk, Wesley Sweeney and an underage boy--inhaled a white powdery substance at a house party in Grand Forks on the night of June 10th.

Witnesses told police Sweeney provided the powder. A short time later, the three began yelling, screaming, and speaking incoherently.  They were kicked out of the house party.

Early the next morning, Bjerk was found dead on this sidewalk. Sweeney and the underage teen were found nearby--alive, but the boy was hospitalized for several days.

Sweeney was arrested Wednesday of this week. He is in the Grand Forks jail on $100,000 bond.

There is a second death believed connected to this same batch of synthetic drug. Elijah Stai, 17, died two days after Bjerk. Adam Budge is charged with third-degree murder. He is accused of providing the drug to Stai.

A third man, Andrew Spofford, is in jail in Grand Forks. Investigators believe Spofford actually made the drug in question. Police have described that drug as a chemical similar to L.S.D.
