Nun's Real Estate Deal - Valley News Live - KVLY/KXJB - Fargo/Grand Forks

Nun's Real Estate Deal

Posted: Updated:

A Community of northern valley nuns is doing a bit of real estate wrangling to secure their future home.

The Sisters of Mount Saint Benedict Monastery in Crookston are working on a deal to sell part of their property, in order to build a new home.

When the Catholic high school closed here in Crookston back in 1982, there were 200 Sisters working at the Mount Saint Benedict Monastery.

Today, there around 40 living here at any given time, another 30 are working at missions throughout the U.S..  The vast majority of Sisters still here are now senior citizens.

Sister Laurian Lasha: "Well, I entered in 1946. So, that's 60 some years ago and I spent a lot of my time teaching."

The declining population here has left them with a massive building that used to be the high school. The fourth floor is closed and the Sisters residences are on parts of the third and second floors.

They're now negotiating a deal so sell this building to make way for a new nursing home facility. And a new building would be attached to the back of the complex for the Sisters living quarters.

Sister Jennifer Kehrwald: "Our tradition is about 1,500 years long. So, we believe the Benedictine life will continue. There may just not be as many Communities in the future or developing into a different form. We don't know."

As this Community's population continues to pass, with fewer women joining their order, their real estate deal to sell part of their sprawling complex should allow them to continue forward.

Sister Jennifer Kehrwald: "That's right. That's our philosophy. Trusting that God knows what he's doing. We're just trying to be faithful to what we've been called to do.
